Icehotel

Each winter since 1989, a new hotel has been built on the bank of the Torne River from the river's own ice. Blocks are harvested in spring, stored through summer, and carved into walls, beds and furniture once the cold returns.
Invited artists design the art suites, so every season has a different look. Guests sleep on ice beds in thermal sleeping bags at around minus five degrees. Warm rooms and cabins are part of the property too, and most visitors split their stay.
Icehotel 365, a permanent building opened in 2016, keeps ice suites and an ice bar open all year using solar-powered cooling. In winter, the northern lights, dog sledding and snowmobile trips are all close by.
